Letters, 1862-1863.

The collection contains 27 letters from Isaac Liston to his wife Merica, his sister, and other family members in Coffee, Clay County, Indiana. The letters were written while he served with the 85th Indiana Regiment from September 1862 to February 1863. They contain concerns for the family at home and some details of his activities. Also included in the collection are three letters to Merica Liston from her brother William Crist while he was in the same regiment as Isaac. They were written after Isaac's death.

Isaac McCoy Liston (1824-1863) of Lewis, Indiana in Vigo County, was mustered into Company K of the 85th Indiana Regiment on 12 August 1862. The 85th was part of the brigade that engaged Confederate forces under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Thompsons Station, Tennessee, in March 1863. The 85th charged Forrest's troops several times and suffered severe losses. Liston was one of the casualties and died on 5 March 1863. The 85th surrendered and its members were imprisoned at Lib...

The 85th Indiana Infantry was organized on 2 September 1862 in Terre Haute, Indiana. In March of 1863 the unit engaged Confederate troops at the Battle of Thompson's Station in Tennessee. The Union forces surrendered and most of the troops of the 85th were captured and sent to Libby Prison.
